There are literally thousands upon thousands of Christian leaders around the world that interpret the Scriptures for their followers. There is certainly no shortage of Bible teachers. One could conclude that that is the reason there are about as many different views on the doctrines of Christ as there are Christian leaders. But that is not a representation of the true Gospel message.

In the 24th chapter of Luke, Jesus appears to the disciples after His resurrection and finds them in unbelief and confusion concerning the events that had just taken place…until in verse 45 “opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures”. And that is the key to all truth of Scripture, to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit concerning the written word of God. To simply study the Word with our own minds is a futile effort indeed. There is no other way to know Truth than to be enlightened by the Holy Spirit. In Acts chapter 16, Paul went to the city of Thyatira where he met a woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, “whose heart was opened, that she attend unto the things which were spoken of Paul”. Our hearts and minds must be opened by the Spirit of God to be able to understand the Word.

In the Old Testament God gave His Spirit to certain men in certain situations when necessary, but in this new dispensation, after victory over death, the Holy Spirit of God became available to all who believe. !John 2;27 makes this absolutely clear, “But the anointing (Holy Spirit) which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.” None of this is to say that Bible teachers are bad, but it does point out that we, individually, must establish a personal relationship with the Lord (one where we speak to Him and He speaks to us) in order that we know the truth concerning what we hear and not simply take someones word for it. We must, individually, be able to say with confidence that the Lord “spoke to me.” What enlightenment has the Lord (Holy Spirit) shed on you this week… and we are not talking about what you heard someone teach or preach?
