A ship is safe in the harbor but it was designed to carry a cargo and sail the high seas even though there is risk involved. There may be a bad storm which cannot be avoided or the captain may make a mistake, either of which could endanger the success of the voyage. The same principal applies to the Christian life. One can choose to simply go by the book, in which case there is no need for a personal relationship with the Lord for it can be concluded that all the Lord had to say He said in the Bible. But that would contradict hundreds of Scriptures that say men were lead by the Spirit and heard His voice. So, even though it involves more risk, we must cultivate an ear for the leading of the Holy Spirit to be truly Christian.

Consider, for example, Abraham who the Lord told to take his son to the mountain and sacrifice on the alter. Does that seem consistent with Scripture. That was the abominable practice of pagan society at the time. Or what about when the Lord told Hosea to marry a prostitute in order that he could experience, first hand, what God felt about His people committing spiritual adultery. What about Joshua when the Lord told him to march around Jericho seven times and the walls would fall down. Where did that come from? And then there was Gideon. The Lord told him to reduce his army of twenty two thousand men to three hundred and then engage the enemy. Who would have agreed that made sense and came from the Lord? Finally, there were the apostles, who left all to follow Christ, were lead by the Holy Spirit throughout life and were martyred for it by the established religion of the day.

Dear Christian traveler, are you still sitting in the harbor, pondering the rules that we are to live by? It’s past time to be bold, proclaim the truth, be still enough to hear His voice and be led by Holy Spirit (and know beyond any doubt that it is His Spirit speaking). It’s time for us to set ourselves aside and let the power of God, by His spirit, work through us in miraculous ways; ways that will accomplish his will on earth. Renew a commitment…Take a chance…set sail!

I am resolved to follow the Saviour,
Faithful and true each day
Heed what He sayeth, do what he willeth,
He is the living way. (I am Resolved)
