Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote “Cheap grace is the deadly enemy of our church….Cheap grace means grace sold on the market like cheapjacks wares…Grace without price; grace without cost! The essence of grace, we suppose, is that the account has been paid in advance; and, because it has been paid, everything can be had for nothing….An intellectual assent to that idea is held to be of itself sufficient to secure remission of sins. In such a church the world finds a cheap covering for its sins; no contrition is required, still less any real desire to be delivered from sin. Cheap grace therefore amounts to a denial of the living Word of God, in fact, a denial of the Incarnation of the Word of God.”

Bonhoeffer stood on the principles of the Word of God. He has been described as a giant among men and a child before God. He was executed by special order of Himmler at the concentration camp at Flossenburg on April 9th, 1945, just a few days before Germany was liberated by the Allies. Salvation and discipleship are costly! They may not cost you your life but they are not cheap. It cost Jesus His life, and it will cost us as well.

But having said all this it must be pointed out that there is another side. If we have paid the price, become a living sacrifice, put our all on the alter, and made the ultimate commitment to serve Him by claiming no agenda of our own, there can be no greater peace, fulfillment or joy in this life and certainly the next. To know His voice and walk with God; to feel His love and guidance in every area of our being is LIFE.

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Greater than all my sin!
How shall my tongue describe it?
Where shall its praise begin?

Taking away my burden,
Setting my spirit free;
For the wonderful grace of
Jesus reaches me…(Wonderful Grace of Jesus)
