This is Jim Rapalje’s testimony as he practices medicine in North Carolina and is proof that God is still in the business of miracles. He is the same yesterday, today and forever and is available to all who believe, cry out to Him and are willing.

My father was the pastor of a holiness church, Nazarene, and altar calls were offered weekly. Most of the preaching tended toward ‘get saved or go to hell, maybe tonight’ and like most guilty folks, especially teenagers, I made my way to the altar almost every week, to get my ticket punched to avoid hell fire and brimstone. By the time I left home for college, I was ripe to rebel big time, and I did.

I was 27 years old and married for the second time before the coming of my first child. I also had been running from the Lord for years and relished the sinful life I pursued. After the birth of our first child, God started pursuing me and we started looking for a church to attend. I read a book about the ‘rapture’ and started fearing going to hell again, just as I did as an adolescent. I also came under strong conviction and essentially was a real life example of John 6:44 . . . “No one can come to Me unless the Father draw him”. But I still did not want to give up my sinful life.

Apparently, God did not tire of chasing me, and on December 20, 1975, while delivering a baby in the rural hospital where I worked in the town of Darlington, South Carolina, my life was changed. Having trouble facilitating the delivery of this child I feared that the mother would bleed to death, the twelfth baby this lady was having. I was at the end of my efforts and scared. I stopped and looked up into the surgical light above us and instantly prayed. “God please help to deliver this baby!” Immediately I heard Him say in an audible spiritual voice, “It is you that needs deliverance!” I knew it was God and I knew He was right, and I said, “OK, I give up, deliver me Lord!” Immediately the baby was delivered . . and I was born again. That day in 1975 changed my life forever.

I know in my heart what it means,
Salvation, that word so divine;
His spirit has witnessed to mine,
And I know in my heart what it means . . . (I Know in My Heart What It Means)
