Several years ago my daughter and son in law bought a mobile home and moved it onto a piece of land they owned. After moving in, their 2 year old daughter began to cry and point to something, no one knew what, and she continued to cry, off and on, for several days. At the same time her mother began to sense an evil presence which she told her husband about. He was at work much of the time and told her she must be imagining things. One day it was so bad that the mother packed up the children and drove to her husband’s place of work and informed him that she knew something evil was in that house and she could not live there anymore. He, also, had begun to feel something and so he called me to ask what to do. Well, it isn’t something you run into everyday so I called the preacher who simply said that he had never run into that before and wasn’t sure himself.

I did the only thing I knew to do and that was to call other family members and ask them to come to the mobile home on Friday night and we would pray about the situation. Five couples came and after the details had been gone over my son in law told us one additional thing. He said that ever since they moved in they noticed a lingering putrid smell in the living room around a certain chair. He said they had looked high and low for a dead mouse or something but nothing was found. Some looked again but were unable to identify the source.

Then we all got on our knees and every adult prayed for the situation. It was a rather moving experience by itself and of particular note was the payer spoken by one visiting daughter from Arizona. She prayed that, “God so fill this house with His spirit that there would be no room for anything else”. When everyone was finished it was silent for some time, some of the girls were in tears and there was a strong sense of closeness to God and each other. One by one they all went home.

The next day I was anxious to know how it was going (to my shame I did not really expect to have accomplished much) and my son in law reported that his little girl had stopped crying and they did not feel that presence that was there before. I called again the next day and got the same report. When I called the third day he said that everything was fine but added that they also were glad that that putrid, dead smell was gone. Over the next weeks we rejoiced that the Lord had been true to His word and cared about those who diligently seek Him.

But, maybe, the most interesting thing about this whole incident was that a month or so later we had a visiting missionary from Africa speak at the church. After the service I related the incident to him and you could tell that something struck a chord. He said, “I know exactly what smell you are talking about. I have been in the homes of witch doctors in Africa and would describe the smell as almost like something is dead but slightly different.”

We all believed that the Lord had done something right from the start but this astounded us and confirmed that we serve a God who is intimately interested in our welfare and anxious to respond to our sincere call for help. It will be something we, as a family, will never forget.

Be not dismayed whate’er betide,
God will take care of you;
Beneath His wings of love abide,
God will take care of you.
No matter what may be the test,
God will take care of you;
Lean, weary one, upon His breast,
God will take care of you. (God Will Take Care of You)
