Years ago after returning from the war I had many questions of God about why there are wars, murders, robberies, child abuse, disease and many other terrible things. If He was a loving God that should not be! It was a serious question and I somewhat demanded, in my own simple mind, that God explain that to me. As I sat pondering those things one cold winter night in Minnesota in front of the fireplace, a sudden realization came over me. It wasn’t a vision or anything so dramatic as that, it was simply a powerful mental understanding that overshadowed my mind that would subsequently never leave me. It was a picture and a sudden total understanding of the sovereignty of God. It was as if an almost audible voice said “Who do you think you are?” The message that came through was that He had this all in order, was moving toward a final outcome and I, man, would never completely understand until His coming and the spiritual war was over. Interestingly enough, my specific question was not answered but my doubt, fear and demand for answers were. I felt, in a way, like I had when the war was over for me and I was going home years before. There is a passage of Scripture that has since been very uplifting for me.

“He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and cuts the spear in sunder; he burns the chariot in the fire. Be still and know that I am God”, Psalm 46:9.

I have never had to ask Him that question again!

When Jesus as Lord I crowned,
My heart with this peace did abound.
In Him the rich blessing I found
Sweet peace the gift of God’s love.

Peace, peace, sweet peace
Wonderful gift from above,
Wonderful, wonderful peace
Sweet peace, the gift of God’s love . . . (Sweet peace, the gift of God’s love)
