John 14;6 is, perhaps, one of the most profound verses of Scripture in the entire Bible. The message of this verse is what separates Jesus from all other religious leaders in history; Further, to not embrace and understand the full meaning of this statement by our Lord will render the nominal Christian ineffective in his walk and puzzled by the lack of answers to his prayers.

The best way to understand what Jesus said here is to consider what He did not say. He did not say, “I will show you the way” but rather, “I am the way”. He did not say, “I will tell you the truth” but rather “I am the truth”. And He did not say, “I will show you life” but rather “I am the life”. Now, one could spend a lot of time and ink describing all that this verse does mean, but it also can be very simply stated and clearly understood by the most unsophisticated seeker. The meaning is, ‘We must know Jesus personally, intimately, and continually (be aware of His presence). We must know his voice and speak with Him (Moses spoke to God as a man speaks to a man, face to face). To know Jesus as we would know our closest friend and to commune with Him will automatically open the way, answer all questions in the Christian journey and grant the abundant life that is promised. It will also cause our prayers to be heard and answered by a God who gives ‘far beyond our asking’. Millions of people around the world know “of Him”; Very few know “Him”.

A clear and correct understanding of this verse sheds light on some of the most controversial issues of the Bible, one being Law vs. Grace. (Are we under the law or free from the law) If we know Jesus personally and we are led b y Him daily we will automatically fulfill the law. (There will almost be no need for it). It’s stated another way in Galatians, “Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh”.

Finally, we should notice how the verse ends, “No man cometh unto the father, but by me”. There is no option here, the true Christian must know Jesus as a close friend (on a first name basis) know His voice and be led by His Spirit. Nothing less is acceptable!

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear;
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer. (What a Friend We Have in Jesus)
