The Christian doctrine of non-resistance has been all but lost over the last few centuries. Jesus clearly stated this position when He was seized by the religious leaders in the garden of Gethsemane. Peter had just cut off the ear of the high priest’s servant in an effort to protect Jesus but Jesus made this famous statement in verse 36. “My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews but mow is my kingdom not from hence.” As a result of this clear teaching by Christ, Christians in Rome refused to take up arms in the years immediately following the crucifixion, During the time of the dark ages NOMINAL Christianity formed the crusades in an effort to make everyone a Christian and in the process killed the TRUE believers in Christ who refused to fight, (what kind of irony is that). In more modern times, world war 1 and 11, (both in Europe and the United States) Christians who believed it was wrong to fight were jailed for their position.

Admittedly, the Christian doctrine of non-resistance is the most difficult position for the true believer to defend of all the doctrines of Christ. No non-Christian is capable of understanding and, in fact, few in the masses of the Christian world even understand that position. It can only be described as a higher calling that the Lord has placed on the believer. As a Christian we are not of this world and must rise above the fighting and turmoil that exists here. And non-resistance goes far beyond just fighting in war, it’s an attitude that does not resist in disputes, relationships with family, neighbors or those with other ideas.

At the same time, and this is the hard part, Christians appreciate the protection that the government affords its people. The same God that calls for the non-resistant life admonishes the believer to obey and honor those in the government as far as is possible. Ultimately, however, our complete trust is to be placed in Him, not organizations of this world. We will offer more on this in tomorrows post!
