As True Christians we have only one authority, the written and living Word of God. There are a thousand different voices out there; family, friends, preachers, churches, experts, written rules, denominations, doctrines and an endless number of others all the way from a casual acquaintance to the Pope of Rome. And they all claim a certain amount of authority. But, when it comes down to the bottom line, or as one preacher used to say “where the rubber meats the road” there is only one guiding force for us that believe, the Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord is gracious and has given us, as a comfort, fellow believers and a church fellowship, but finally we must hear His voice and that voice and authority supersedes all others.

Has He clearly and definitely spoken to you today? last week? Last month? And if we cannot say with certainty that He spoke ‘thus and thus’ are we a nominal Christian (one who knows about Him but does not know Him personally and commune with Him). Jesus said, “My sheep know my voice”.

A friend was once asked how he knew the voice he was hearing was the Lord”s? (A fair question) His reply was “I know in my knower”. That is certainly not a very scientific answer, nor is it found in Scripture but it is for sure that when you hear Him you will ‘know in your knower’ and you will never be able to deny it. The more you long to hear Him, the more time you spend with Him, the more often you will hear His ‘still small voice’ and it will be loud and clear in your inner being.

I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses.

And He walks with me, and He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own;
And the joy we share as we tarry there,
None other has ever known…(In the Garden)
