Faith is defined in the eleventh chapter of Hebrews as “The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”, the key word here being substance. It’s not so much the act here that is the substance but the faith that caused it to happen. Almost nothing that Christ ever did on earth consisted of common sense but rather of faith as He was led by the Father. In like manner those of TRUE faith in Christ seldom do the thing that makes the most common sense according to man’s understanding and for that they are often shunned, persecuted and criticized.

If there is any question concerning the importance of faith (believing every word that comes out of the mouth of Christ) consider this. Jesus made a comment about faith every time He healed a person. “Be it to you according to your faith”. “Your faith has made you well”. “O woman, great is your faith”. “When Jesus saw their faith”. “I have not found so great a faith”. “Your faith has saved you”. Further, Scripture attributes the great accomplishment of men in the Bible to their faith. “By faith Able”. “By faith Enoch”. “By faith Noah”. “By faith Abraham”, “By faith Isaac”, “By faith Jacob”, “By faith Joseph”, “By faith Moses”. Because of His grace and mercy, our Lord does not require a great deal of faith to start. “Have faith as a grain of mustard seed” but we must realize that HE is the “author and finisher of our faith” and do we also know that “Without faith it is impossible to please God”. The fact is that “The just shall live by faith”, not by common sense or man’s reasoning. That is what separates the true believer from the world and provides him with peace, joy and the abundant life.

Do we have the faith to believe that He will deliver us from trouble, heal our bodies, enlighten us to spiritual truths and understanding and, in the end, give us a home with Him? Because if we don’t . . . He won’t.

Faith is the living pow’r from heav’n,
Which grasps the promise God has giv’n;
Securely fixed on Christ alone,
A trust that cannot be o’er-thrown . . . (Faith Is a Living Power from Heaven)
