In John chapter 13 Jesus was teaching His disciples truth when He said, “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.” Another translation says, “Blessed are you if you do them”. When a person knows they should do something and they follow through and do it, they receive a surprising blessing. It always is that the one proclaiming Christ, the one writing a book on God’s truth or even the layman that lives the Christian life rather than just talking about it, benefits far more than the one that hears or sees. The obedient one, the doer, comes away with more understanding, greater spiritual perception and a closer relationship with the Lord than he thought possible; all because he was obedient. Talk dominates the Christian landscape but the doers are far and few between; those who sacrifice THINGS to personally know the Lord and hear His voice. To be a doer is to instantly know more than you knew before!

Recently I stopped at a fast food restaurant for lunch. As I got out of my car I noticed a bus load of city kids unloading to go inside. I know they were city kids because of the different hair colors, baggy pants and all sorts of gadgets hanging on them. As one young lady passed by me she said, “Sir do you have a dollar so I can get a hamburger?” It washed over me that I should do more, so I said, “No I don’t have just a dollar…but I do have three dollars.” I handed her three dollar bills. She didn’t say anything, just turned and walked toward the restaurant. Then she stopped, turned and looked at me for what seemed like a long time and then walked on. I have no idea what she was thinking. Maybe she thought this guy is retarded, he can’t count, or maybe she wondered for just a moment why I would give more than she asked for. I’m sure that whoever was in charge of those kids had lunch all planned out, I doubt she even had a need and certainly it was a very small blessing for her. But it was an enormous joy for me to know that I had been obedient to the ‘instant in season’ witness asked of me. I came away with a better understanding of giving and doing as opposed to just talking. Maybe one day someone will have the opportunity to explain to her why a person would give more than asked for.

As true Christians we are to give freely, go the extra mile and if we are obedient in this area, we will immediately receive greater spiritual understanding, insight and a closer walk with Him.
