The prophet Amos lived about 800 years BC and his message was very similar to other true prophet of the day, namely calling for the people to repent for the Day of judgement was at hand. In the course of writing the book he paints a picture of the spiritual condition of the day. The people were playing at religion and Amos tells them what God said, “I hate all your show and pretense—the hypocrisy of your religious festivals and solemn assemblies. I will not accept your burnt offerings and grain offerings. I won’t even notice all your choice peace offerings. Away with your hymns of praise! They are only noise to my ears. I will not listen to your music, no matter how lovely it is.” (nit) The people did not know “what it was to do right” their homes were filled with wealth at the expense of the poor and needy. They hated honesty and despised those who tell the truth. There was sexual immorality and worse. Amos further described the situation as follows; “You sing idle songs to the sound of the harp, and you fancy yourselves to be great musicians, as King David was. You drink wine by the bowlful, and you perfume yourselves with exotic fragrances, caring nothing at all that your nation is going to ruin…Suddenly all your revelry will end” and you will be destroyed as Sodom and Gomorrah. But the people continued to ignore Amos and went about their business of making money as usual. History shows that Israel came to an end just as Amos said… Does any of this picture sound familiar? Is it not the same picture (and worse with the killing of babies) that could be painted today concerning our country? It is not popular to be an alarmist but ‘Time is Short’, “Judgement is coming’.

There is one more thing here to be noted. In Amos’s day the nominal believers that he was talking about were calling out to God to come and establish a kingdom. but listen to what Amos says about that, “How terrible it will be for you who say, ‘If only the day of the Lord were here? For then the Lord would rescue us from all our enemies.’ But you have no idea what you are wishing for. That day will not bring light and prosperity, but darkness and disaster.”
Amos was concerned that the people thought they were OK when, in fact, they would be surprised that they would not be counted among the the children of God when judgement came.

If, in our country today, those who call themselves Christians were true to the faith, they would be acting as ‘the salt of the earth’ and our country would not be in the shape it is. But because, in the main, we have become nominal, lukewarm and half-hearted we better be careful when we ask the Lord to return for we may find ourselves in darkness and destruction.

When Jesus comes to reward His servants,
Whether it be noon or night,
Faithful to Him will he find us watching,
With our lamps all trimmed and bright? (Will Jesus Find Us Watching)
